# SuperStack Final-Polish Report: DOWNMASS-01 **Candidate:** DOWNMASS-01 (COLLEGIUM 1st Battalion, Space Infrastructure Systems) **Artifacts:** `dissertation.md` (approx. 60k words), `deck.md` (defense brief) **Mode:** ACADEMIC. **Branding:** NEUTRAL (no MITRE markings, no vendor-AI names). **Date of pass:** 2026-06-16 **Method:** Targeted edits in place. No section dropped, no citation altered, no data or number changed. Revised dissertation is longer than the original. ## Headline result The dissertation arrived already authored to the SuperStack specification: HAAF nine-layer flow present and intact, citations unified and clickable, zero em dashes, and clean of nearly all AI tells. The polish pass was therefore surgical rather than reconstructive. The edits made were (a) the King Charles ceremonial register applied to the three executive-facing framing spots only, and (b) removal of a small set of non-load-bearing slop terms. Every quantitative claim traces to a real retrieved source carrying a DOI or resolver URL. Source traceability is intact; no number, parameter, or citation was changed. No rigor gap found to repair. 2. **HAAF logic band (mandatory tier; Toulmin wrapped at Layer 4).** Audited across all eight chapters and the Assurance Case Summary. Confirmed present and intact: answer-first executive thesis stated as H0/H1; current/desired/gap/consequence problem frame in every chapter; full Toulmin units (claim, grounds, warrant, backing, qualifier, rebuttal) on every major claim; claim-evidence-reasoning interpretation blocks; explicit causal mechanisms in driver-to-mechanism-to-effect-to-consequence-to-implication form (correlation and causation kept distinct); confidence statements calibrated to the design stage with explicit "what would change it"; assurance-case summary (G0, S1-S5, assumptions A1-A5, context, residual risk) consistent with the chapters. Layer 9 architecture traceability is correctly and explicitly scoped OUT (the work is an econometric measurement, not a system design), consistent with `research/expansion_plan.md`. No missing element; nothing fabricated. 3. **Super-humanizer (anti-slop, authentic voice).** Audited. The prose already varies sentence length well (per-chapter stdev 14-21 words, range 4 to 125), names abstractions, and avoids scaffolding. Removed: "unlock"/"unlocks" (2), one body instance of "landscape" (paraphrase), one stylistic "robust to its own outcome." Confirmed absent: "delve," "tapestry," "realm," "moreover" overuse, "it is important to note," "in conclusion," "this section will." 4. **MITRE-humanizer (discipline only; neutral work).** Em dashes already zero; re-verified zero. Banned phrases removed to zero (see list). Academic null-hypothesis / limitations / threats-to- validity language deliberately preserved (the zero-negative-words rule does NOT apply to academic prose). The 23 "robustness" and 38 remaining "robust" instances were inspected individually and retained because each is load-bearing statistical terminology: the named "de Chaisemartin and D'Haultfoeuille robust estimator," the "doubly robust" Callaway-Sant'Anna class, "robustness checks," "cluster-robust standard error," and "robust across methods." Stripping these would corrupt the methodology. 5. **Novel-polish (academic).** Audited the opening and closing of each chapter and the sentence- length distribution. Burstiness and lexical variety are healthy; openings and closings are strong. The King Charles additions (below) further strengthened the opening of the Abstract and Introduction and the close of the Conclusion. No degradation introduced. 6. **Executive-storytelling (light).** The Abstract and Introduction are already stakes-first; process-label scaffolding ("this section will") is absent. Payoff arc is clear (the value is the design-based number, realized whichever way the test resolves). No change required beyond the register touch. 7. **King Charles register (framing only).** Ran the mandatory evidence step (`query_style_exemplars.py --mode ceremonial --limit 6`) and inferred the dignified, measured, stewardship-and-service register from the Coldstream Guards / Royal Marines / Gurkha Artillery address exemplars. Applied it to exactly three executive-facing spots and nowhere else: the first sentence of the Abstract; the opening framing sentence of Introduction 1.1; and the final sentence-group of Conclusion 8.5. Mirrored lightly onto the deck's opening "Answer First" and closing "Defense Summary" slides. Register, not impersonation: no royal signature forms, no copied transcript phrasing, no claim of Royal Household approval. The analytic body remains in its technical register. 8. **Literary-methods (Deictic Shift + Rhetoric of Science).** Audited. Temporal references are anchored to calendar dates ("November 2022," "2015 to 2023," "the present record"); "this/that/ it" referents resolve unambiguously; entities are introduced before pronoun reference. Epistemic modality is correctly calibrated to the design-stage evidence grade throughout: estimates are stated in conditional/future terms ("expected positive," "the design would estimate," "would falsify"), never as executed findings. No correction needed. 9. **HAAF recheck (closing logic pass).** Re-verified after all prose edits. Every HAAF layer survived: answer-first openings intact (the ceremonial sentence precedes, does not displace, the answer-first thesis); warrants and qualifiers preserved; causal mechanisms not flattened to correlations; confidence statements preserved (91 confidence statements, 52 falsifiability mentions, H0/H1 structure intact); the out-of-scope Layer 9 decision unchanged. Two instances of "paradigm" and four of "utilization" were also preserved: all are inside cited paper titles (Peeters, "The Paradigm Shift of NewSpace") or are the fixed domain term of art "space resource utilization" (ISRU). ## Edits applied (exhaustive list) 1. **Abstract, first sentence (added):** King Charles stewardship framing ("The National Airspace System is a shared public trust...") prepended ahead of the existing technical opening. 2. **Introduction 1.1, opening (added):** stewardship framing sentence ("The airspace above us is a commons held in common...") prepended ahead of the answer-first thesis. 3. **Conclusion 8.5, closing (added):** dignified stewardship-and-service closing ("The work is offered in that spirit of stewardship: the skies are a shared inheritance..."). 4. **Chapter 2.1:** "a measured price would unlock" -> "a measured price would permit." 5. **Chapter 2.4.3 heading:** "The mechanism by which the price unlocks the institution" -> "...by which the price enables the institution to change." 6. **Chapter 3.3:** "for the evolving aerospace landscape in Europe" (body) -> "across the evolving European aerospace." 7. **Chapter 7.9:** "the dissertation's worth is robust to its own outcome" -> "...does not depend on which way the test resolves." 8. **Deck "Answer First" slide:** stewardship framing added to the opening. 9. **Deck "Defense Summary" slide:** stewardship-and-service closing added. No other text was changed. All edits are additive or one-for-one word substitutions; none alters meaning, removes content, or shortens the document. ## Citation hygiene (final-deliverable requirement) Verified, not modified, because the document already complied: - Every in-text citation is in the normalized clickable form `[\[N\]](#ref-N)` (716 occurrences). - Every reference entry is anchored with the pandoc-safe `` (89 anchors, no `` anywhere). - Every label matches its anchor (0 mismatches); every cited number resolves to a real entry (0 unresolved); no anchor is uncited; no duplicate anchors. - Every DOI in the reference list is a clickable `[10.xxxx](https://doi.org/10.xxxx)` link (88 DOI links matching 88 reference entries; the one non-DOI source carries a resolver URL). The deck's reference slide intentionally lists DOIs as plain text and points to the dissertation backmatter for the full clickable list; this is appropriate for a Marp slide deck and was left as-is. ## Flagged for the author 1. **Statistical power is the binding residual risk**, already named honestly in Sections 8.3 and 6.3 and in the Assurance Case residual-risk block. No action needed for the writing; it is a property of the data, not the prose. Carried here only so the examiner sees it was not smoothed over. 2. **The avoided-cost parameter is the lowest-confidence object** and depends on ReentryFlow validation. The dissertation flags this consistently and hedges it with the continuous-intensity route. Preserved exactly; no overclaiming introduced. 3. **No fabricated content, no fake imperfections, no silent meaning changes were introduced.** The pass added a dignified register to three framing spots and removed three slop terms.
